A Guide to Smart Sync

Introduction

Smart Sync is a handy Platform feature which allows you to pair objects so that any changes made to the ‘parent’ object will be automatically synced to the assigned ‘child’ object.

This feature is very useful as it allows you to make changes only once to your AdWords campaigns and have those changes automatically propagate to non-AdWords campaigns. That saves you time and increases your traffic — all with no extra work involved on your part.

How to pair objects

To get started with Smart Sync, you’ll need to pair your objects. You can do this at the Account, Campaign, and Group levels depending on your needs. Once paired, Smart Sync supported edits and object creations will automatically be synced from the ‘parent’ pair to the ‘child’ pair.

Account Pairing

Account pairing is done in the Accounts tab, powered by the SmartGrid.

To pair accounts, navigate to the Accounts tab, then click into the Publisher Accounts sub-tab. Simply double click on the account you would like to act as the ‘parent’ pair to to access its Side Panel. Under the Smart Sync tab in the Side Panel, you can select an eligible ‘child’ account to pair. From this menu, you can also disable the pairing using the Unsync link.

Note: This is currently a beta feature and will need to be enabled by your Platform representative.

Campaign and Group Pairing

The Platform currently supports pairing of campaigns and groups via the Copy and Sync option in the Campaigns and Groups SmartGrid respectively. This allows you to copy a campaign or group (along with its keywords and creatives) from one publisher to another and have those two objects Smart Synced going forward.

To get started, simply navigate to SmartGrid > Campaigns/Groups > Manage > Copy & Sync.

Supported Publishers

Smart Sync currently supports syncing from Google parent pairs to Bing child pairs.

How to tell if objects are paired

Paired object settings (Accounts, Campaigns, Groups) are displayed in the Side Panel of each object. To access the Side Panel, simply double-click on the row of the object in the SmartGrid and navigate to the Smart Sync tab to see if an object is paired. You can do this from both parent and a child objects.
Campaign Side Panel indicating Campaign ‘456’ in a Google account is paired to a corresponding Bing campaign called ‘456’

Group Side Panel indicating Group ‘bbb’ in a Google account is paired to a corresponding Bing campaign called ‘bbb’.

What happens after an object is paired

When objects are paired two main actions are synced: Object Creation, and Edits to an Object. Let’s look at these in a little more detail.

Note: Pairing is available in the Platform anytime, however if you’d like to enable the Smart Syncing of changes, you’ll need to ask your Platform representative to enable this for you.

Object Creation

When two objects are paired, the creation of any lower-level objects under the parent pair is automatically cloned and paired to the child pair.  Some common examples:

  • Clone and pair Campaign A from Google to Bing. Call the new Bing campaign Campaign AB. Campaign A is now the parent pair and Campaign AB is now the child pair. If Group G is created in Campaign A, that group will be cloned and paired to Campaign AB. This also applies to Keywords and Creatives.
  • Clone and pair Group X from Google Campaign A to Bing Campaign B where Campaign A and Campaign B are not paired. New group is called Group XB. Any keyword or creative adds to Group X will clone and pair to Group XB. Any new groups added to Campaign A, however, will not be cloned to Campaign B since those are not paired.

Object Edits

Similarly, when objects are paired, any SmartSync supported edits are automatically synced to the child pair.

Object edits and creations are picked up by SmartSync in real time, so you should expect to see any synced changes to appear within seconds in the child pair. These changes will show up in the Activity Log as if they were any regular action, and these specific tasks can be held or pushed manually as normal.
